SKUAPILOTS se compromete a brindar asistencia de navegación antártica de alta calidad, respaldada por nuestro equipo de asesores expertos. Nuestros pilotos asesores están preparados para asistir a todo tipo de embarcaciones, incluyendo cruceros, buques de investigación, buques logísticos y yates, que se aventuren en aguas antárticas al sur del Cabo de Hornos.
Semanas o meses antes de la llegada del barco a la Antártida, nuestro equipo de pilotos expertos puede ayudar a planificar la travesía para alcanzar los puntos de interés más atractivos del continente blanco. Además, antes de navegar por el Paso Drake, nuestro principal objetivo será brindar al capitán asesoramiento experto para garantizar una travesía segura y exitosa.
CERTIFICACIONES Y AUTORIZACIONES
Todos nuestros pilotos asesores cuentan con la certificación correspondiente según el Código Polar STCW de la OMI (7.11 y 7.12 Formación básica y avanzada para buques que operan en aguas polares, IMO STCW, Tabla A-V/4-1 Básica y Tabla A-V/4-2 Avanzada). Además, algunos de nuestros pilotos asesores también han impartido estos cursos, tanto en Chile como en el extranjero.
Todos nuestros pilotos asesores ostentan la categoría de “Senior Ice Advisor”, tal como consta en el Permiso de Navegación emitido por la Autoridad Marítima de la República de Chile.
Además, nuestros profesionales también pueden brindarle apoyo que pueda requerir en las siguientes áreas:
SAR (Salvamento y Rescate)
En caso de emergencia o situación imprevista, nuestros asesores conocen el apoyo que puede brindar cada base local. Además, nuestro dominio del español facilita una coordinación fluida con la Patrulla Antártica de Búsqueda y Rescate, integrada por buques de las armadas de Chile y Argentina.

Drake
El Paso Drake es conocido por ser uno de los mares más tormentosos del planeta. Nuestros asesores cuentan con la experiencia necesaria para determinar el mejor momento para la travesía y así evitar situaciones de riesgo para pasajeros y tripulación. También pueden sugerir rutas alternativas a la Antártida durante el viaje para garantizar una navegación segura.
Ice Pilots
Las principales competencias de nuestro Ice Pilot son:
- Capitanes retirados de la Armada de Chile o de la Marina Mercante Nacional con amplia experiencia a bordo y varias expediciones al mando o como asesores de buques que operan en la Antártida.
- Durante muchos años, ejercer como práctico de fiordos, autorizado por el gobierno chileno para conducir embarcaciones de pasajeros, carga, científicas y yates en el Estrecho de Magallanes y en los extensos canales y fiordos de la Patagonia chilena.
- Cursos aprobados sobre operaciones en aguas Antárticas, certificados por la Autoridad Marítima de Chile. En algunos casos, los instructores de estos cursos cuentan con la certificación del Código Polar Avanzado de la OMI para los cursos 7.11 y 7.12.
- Expertos en las normas de protección y conservación del medio ambiente del continente Antártico.
- Conocemos a la perfección los distintos recursos que se encuentran en la zona. De todos los países del mundo, Chile es el más cercano a la Antártida… Somos “locales”.

TARIFAS Y COMISIONES
Gracias a nuestra proximidad a la Antártida, nuestros pilotos especialistas pasan menos tiempo a bordo, lo que reduce el tiempo y el costo de su transporte hacia y desde los puertos de embarque y desembarque, especialmente si estos se encuentran en Sudamérica. Estos factores hacen que nuestras tarifas sean altamente competitivas en comparación con las de otros proveedores que ofrecen el mismo servicio.
“Si algún cliente nos solicita más de un viaje en una temporada, se aplicará un descuento especial al valor final a pagar”.
Nuestras tarifas son por viaje y en dólares estadounidenses. Se acuerdan con antelación para cada caso particular, ya que varían según la duración y la dificultad del viaje, las características del buque y el tiempo de inactividad durante el mismo.
Feb. / Marzo 2026:
SkuaPilots a bordo MS Borealis.
Tuvimos la gran oportunidad de trabajar a bordo del impresionante MS Borealis bajo el mando del capitán Mikael Degerlund. Gracias a su pericia marinera, pudimos navegar por lugares espectaculares, como la bahía Wilhelmina, el paso de Plata, el canal Errera, la bahía Andvord, la bahía Paradise, el canal Neumayer, Port Lockroy y el famoso canal LeMaire, donde alcanzamos los 65° 05′ de latitud sur. Todos los pasajeros quedaron maravillados con esta experiencia única.
Febrero 2026:
SkuaPilots en McMurdo, Estación Antática USA.
SKUAPILOTS participó con dos Ice Pilot en la compleja operación de traslado del nuevo muelle (NSF DISCOVERY PIER) desde Nueva Zelanda hasta la estación McMurdo de EE. UU., que llegó intacto a su destino (2.100 NM).

Ene. / Feb. 2026:
SkuaPilots a Bordo "Celebrity Equinox".
Skuapilots mantuvo una excelente relación de trabajo con el equipo del puente de mando del “Celebrity Equinox” durante la temporada 2026. Bajo el liderazgo excepcional del capitán Leo Palaiokrassas, los tres viajes fueron un rotundo éxito. Los pasajeros quedaron encantados con los impresionantes paisajes antárticos.

Skuapilots en Seatrade 2025. Miami, USA.
Nuestro director ejecutivo y fundador, Gerardo Covacevich, sostuvo una serie de reuniones productivas con clientes clave. Estos encuentros nos permitieron coordinar mejor nuestros esfuerzos y profundizar nuestras relaciones profesionales, fortaleciendo aún más los lazos de confianza mutua que definen nuestro trabajo.
6/11 Marzo 2025:
La Isla Elefante, el Estrecho Antártico, el Estrecho de Gerlache, la Isla Cuverville, el Canal Neumayer, Port Lockroy y el Canal LeMaire fueron algunos de los excelentes puntos de interés que el MS Oosterdam, bajo el mando del Capitán Kevin Beirnaert puso en marcha. Nuestro asesor de SKUA se integró al equipo de puente.
12 Enero 2025:
Excelente encuentro con el capitán del MS “Villa Vie Odyssey”, el capitán “Val” Giuglea. Como antiguo capitán del MS “Balmoral”, dirigió la extraordinaria expedición a la Antártida en febrero de 2023. Durante este viaje, se forjaron fuertes lazos profesionales y de amistad entre él, su tripulación y los pilotos Skua que se embarcaron en esta memorable aventura.
07 Abril 2024:
Durante la última escala del MS Celebrity Eclipse en Valparaíso, Chile, su capitán, Michael Sympouras, tuvo la amabilidad de invitar a bordo a nuestro director ejecutivo y fundador, Gerardo Covacevich. En este agradable encuentro, tuvimos la oportunidad de recordar los buenos momentos vividos a bordo, compartir nuestras experiencias de navegación en aguas antárticas y explorar más alternativas para que los huéspedes disfruten de una experiencia inolvidable en el continente helado.
Enero / Marzo 2024:
Una experiencia magnífica e inolvidable durante cuatro viajes a la Antártida a bordo del Celebrity Eclipse. Excelente trabajo de los pilotos Skua y el equipo del puente, bajo el mando del capitán Michael Sympouras. Los pasajeros disfrutaron de los impresionantes paisajes de Paradise Bay, el estrecho de Gerlache, la isla Elefante y la asombrosa vida marina.
06 Noviembre 2023:
Nuestros Ice Pilot, Carlos Mackenney Sch. y Francisco Azócar N., compartieron sus experiencias operativas y de navegación en la Antártida durante el curso 7.12 de la OMI “FORMACIÓN AVANZADA INTERNACIONAL PARA BUQUES QUE OPERAN EN AGUAS POLARES”, impartido en el Centro de Instrucción y Formación Marítima de Chile.
Tuvimos la gran oportunidad de compartir nuestras experiencias con oficiales navales de Argentina, Australia, China, Colombia, Alemania, Italia, Corea, España, Turquía, Reino Unido, Estados Unidos y Chile.

We are dedicated to ensuring that your voyage is a life-changing experience, marked by safety, uniqueness, and unforgettable memories. Our ice advisors are equipped to assist all types of vessels, including cruise ships, research vessels, logistics vessels, and yachts, venturing into Antarctic waters south of Cape Horn.
Weeks or months before the ship arrives in Antarctica, our team of experts can assist in planning the voyage to reach the most attractive points of interest on the white continent. Additionally, prior to navigating the Drake Passage, our primary objective will be to provide the captain with expert guidance to ensure a safe and successful voyage.
OUR CERTIFICATIONS & CLEARANCES
All our ice advisors are fully certified according to the IMO STCW Polar Code (7.11 & 7.12 Basic & Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters, IMO STCW, Table-A-V/4-1 Basic and Table-A-V/4-2 Advanced). Furthermore, some of our ice advisors have also served as instructors for these courses, both in Chile and abroad.
All of our ice advisors hold the title of “Senior Ice Advisor” as stated in the Seagoing Permit, issued by the Maritime Authority of the Republic of Chile.

In the event of an emergency or unforeseen situation, our advisors are familiar with the support that each local base can provide. Additionally, our proficiency in Spanish facilitates seamless coordination with the Antarctic Search and Rescue Patrol, composed of ships from the Chilean and Argentine navies.

The Drake
The Drake Passage is known for being one of the stormiest seas on the planet. Our advisors have the necessary experience to determine the best time for the crossing in order to avoid risky situations for passengers and crew. They can also suggest alternative routes to Antarctica during the voyage to ensure safe navigation.
Ice Pilots
The main competencies of our Ice Advisors are:
- Retired captains from the Chilean Navy or the National Merchant Marine with extensive experience on board and several expeditions in command or as advisors to ships operating in Antarctica.
- Many years as fjord pilots, authorized by the Chilean government to conduct passenger, cargo, scientific vessels, and yachts in the Magellan Strait and the extended Chilean Patagonia Channels & Fjords.
- Approved courses in operations in Antarctic waters, certified by the Chilean Maritime Authority. In some cases, instructors for these courses & IMO Advanced Polar Code certified for courses 7.11 and 7.12.
- Experts in the norms of environmental protection and conservation of the Antarctic continent.
- Fully familiar with the different and specific resources that can be found in the area. Of all the countries in the world, Chile is the closest to Antarctica… We are “locals”.

RATES & FEES
Because of our proximity to Antarctica, our ice specialists spend less time on board, and less time and money are spent transporting them to and from embarkation and disembarkation ports, especially if these ports are located in South America. These factors make our rates highly competitive compared to those of other providers offering the same service.
Our rates are per trip and in U.S. dollars. They are agreed upon in advance on a case-by-case basis, as they vary depending on the trip’s duration and difficulty, the vessel’s characteristics, and downtime during the trip.

SkuaPilots On board MS Borealis.
We had the great opportunity to work aboard the astonishing MS Borealis under the command of Captain Mikael Degerlund. Thanks to his maritime expertise, we were able to sail through some breathtaking locations, including Wilhelmina Bay, Plata Passage, Errera Channel, Andvord Bay, Paradise Bay, Neumayer Channel, Port Lockroy, and the famous LeMaire Channel, where we reached 65° 05′ South latitude. All of the guests were amazed by this unique experience.

SkuaPilots On board "Celebrity Equinox".
Skuapilots had an excellent working relationship with the bridge team of the “Celebrity Equinox” during the 2026 season. Under the outstanding leadership of Captain Leo Palaiokrassas, all three voyages were resounding successes. The guests were delighted by the breathtaking Antarctic scenery.

6/11 March 2025:
Elephant Island, Antarctic Sound, Gerlache Strait, Cuverville Island, Neumayer Channel, Port Lockroy, LeMaire Channel, were some of the excellent points of interest that MS Oosterdam, under the command of Captain Kevin Beirnaert, developed. Our SKUA Pilot joined the bridge team and did a great job with them, working together.
12 January 2025:
Great meeting with the captain of MS “Villa Vie Odyssey”, Capt. “Val” Giuglea. As the former captain of MS “Balmoral”, he led the extraordinary voyage to Antarctica in February 2023. During this voyage, strong professional and friendship bonds were forged between him and his crew and the Skua pilots who embarked on this remarkable occasion.
3 July 2024:
Several Skua pilots, as former commanders of the old icebreaker “Viel”, were invited to the commissioning of the new icebreaker “Almirante Viel” of the Chilean Navy. This vessel was completely built at the ASMAR shipyard in Talcahuano, Chile. Its great capabilities left us amazed and proud of the great work done by the Chilean workforce.
7 April 2024:
During the last port call of the MS ‘Celebrity Eclipse’ in Valparaiso, Chile, its captain, Captain Michael Sympouras, was kind enough to invite our CEO and founder Gerardo Covacevich on board. During this pleasant meeting, we had the opportunity to reminisce about the good times we had on board, share our sailing experiences in Antarctic waters, and explore more alternatives for guests to have a breathtaking experience on the frozen continent.

A great and unforgettable experience during 4 journeys to Antarctica, aboard the Celebrity Eclipse. Very good work by the Skua Pilots with the Bridge Team, under the leadership of Capt. Michael Sympouras. The guests enjoyed the amazing scenery of Paradise Bay, the Gerlache Strait, Elephant Island, and the amazing marine life.

Our Ice Pilots Carlos Mackenney Sch. and Francisco Azócar N., talked about their operational and navigational experiences in Antarctica to the IMO course 7.12 “INTERNATIONAL ADVANCED TRAINING FOR SHIPS OPERATING IN POLAR WATERS”, in the Chilean Maritime Instruction and Training Center.
We had the great opportunity to share our experiences with Naval Officers from Argentina, Australia, China, Colombia, Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, Türkiye, UK, USA, and Chile.
